Lead partners Randy Rankin, Colby Rankin, and Brian Ward created Platt Park Brewing Company in 2013, looking to join the vibrant and passionate craft beer industry. After finding investors, a craft beer consultant, and the perfect location on historic South Pearl Street in Denver, CO, the partners began their new and exciting journey. Over the course of the fall and winter, the building designs and beer recipes were finalized. The transformation of the Antique Cash Register store to Platt Park Brewing Company was underway, and it was time to hire a brewer.
In April, Greg Matthews was hired as the Head Brewer and came to the group with vast brewing experience and knowledge. His experience of working with Rock Bottom Brewing Company, his warm personality, diligent brewing practices and passion for brewing English and German style beer made him a good fit for the vision of Platt Park Brewing Company.
The name is representative of the neighborhood as the area is known as Platt Park. The logo features a large cog in the background and a new iconic bird that the brewers call the “beer swallow”. The design ties in the tasting room’s recycled building materials sourced from a family farm in Kansas and a barn swallow commonly found in the grasslands of the Great Plains. Featured on everything from hats to shirts, it has proven itself popular since Platt’s opening.
As the first year went by, the team decided to enter beers in the Great American Beer Festival (GABF). Platt Park entered beers into four different categories, and won the Silver Medal in the Vienna-Style Lager category with Gump’s Vienna Lager. This was a huge accomplishment for a brand new brewery to achieve, and the team could not have been more proud of their success.
With a GABF medal on the wall, Platt Park is ready to take the craft beer industry by storm. As always, the best way to enjoy Platt Park Brewing Company is stop by the tasting room and see what Greg has brewing, order in some delicious food from a local restaurant, and enjoy the simple pleasures that can be found in Colorado living.
